The Birthplace of Aleksis Kivi |
|
During his school days and his subsequent studies at the University of Helsinki, Kivi enjoyed visiting his family in Palojoki. When the Stenvall family home was auctioned after the death of his parents in the 1860s, Kivi wanted to buy it for himself but had to abandon this plan due to financial difficulties. The Aleksis Kivi Society bought the house in 1947 and restored it to its original condition. The restoration was completed in 1951 when the building was opened as a museum. The contents of the Stenvall house were sold at an auction in 1866 to buyers from different parts of Palojoki and Nurmijärvi. Some of the objects currently displayed in the museum are originally from the Stenvall house. The landscapes and people of Nurmijärvi had a profound impact on Kivi’s writing. These landscapes and their changes are presented in the photograph exhibition upstairs. Read more | | | The Birthplace of Aleksis Kivi. | |
